What are science-aligned targets and why are they important?

A science-aligned target is an emission reduction commitment set by a company to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius (1.5°C), in line with the Paris Agreement. These targets ensure that your reduction strategy aligns with the global need to halve emissions by 2030 and reach net-zero by 2050. That level of reduction is critical to avoid the most severe impacts of climate change.

We say ‘science-aligned’ to differentiate from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi)—a separate, well-recognized framework for corporate emissions reductions. Science-aligned targets can complement SBTi pathways even if companies do not choose to participate formally in the SBTi program. Ultimately, the underlying “math” to reach net-zero emissions is the same.
