As part of your CTB submission for certification, your company may purchase carbon credits as part of your BVC spend, as long as the projects meet our Standard. Purchasing carbon credits is a way for your investments to have immediate impact. Below, we have some requirements for how to select, procure, and document high quality carbon credits—so read on!
Options for Purchasing Carbon Credits
Buying carbon credits requires some time, but can be an exciting process. There are a few ways you can prepare:
- Review the Standard: Take some time to review 2025 Certification Standard! This will familiarize you with the types of carbon credits we accept toward certification, as well as our documentation requirements to support the credits you've selected. Note: we cannot accept credits that are outside of our requirements. If you have questions about our Standard, please ask them before you make a purchase.
- Select a carbon credit provider: If you are new to purchasing carbon credits, or looking to explore options, check out our carbon credit Provider Directory in the BEE. Here, we’ve listed our top provider partners to streamline your credit searching process. Note that options will differ slightly for each provider listed on this directory:
- Through the directory, some of our credit providers offer contact information for you to reach out and schedule a call in order to purchase credits. Note: if you are reaching out to a provider and working with them directly, you must cross check your credits with the 2025 Certification Standard. If you purchase credits directly from one of our provider partners, do not assume your credits meet the Standard.
- Other credit providers have created unique landing pages on their own websites with online purchase options that you can access through the BEE.
- If you have an existing relationship with a credit provider and hope to continue working with that provider, that’s great! You are not required to work with one of the providers in our directory. Just note that we still will require all credits to meet our 2025 Certification Standard.
- Review our Screening Checklist: As you start selecting specific credit projects to invest in, review our Carbon Credit Screening Priorities and Checklist. The goal of our screening checklist is to provide you with a list of questions to have more meaningful conversations with your credit providers about each project you are considering. The checklist is not exhaustive, and it's also okay if you can't answer each question, but hopefully will give you the details to feel comfortable selecting projects and understanding how each project in your portfolio benefits communities and ecosystems.
- Download the necessary documents: Familiarize yourself with the documentation requirements for your purchase. Brands purchasing credits independently are required to submit an Attestation Form. Download it here. This will be filled out and signed by your carbon credit provider(s) to attest to the quality of the carbon credits you purchased. They will also provide detailed project information. Submit the completed form through the BEE.
We encourage you to be a savvy shopper and explore options from a few carbon credit providers. Higher price doesn’t always mean higher quality. Sometimes you’ll find the same project is sold at different prices by different firms. We’d rather see you buy more tonnes than pay more in fees. That being said, fees are entirely typical in this market and go towards verifications, quality checks, and marketing—all of which help you, the purchaser, make an informed decision and support the quality of the underlying mitigation activity.
Above all else, as you select carbon credits, you must keep the 2025 Certification Standard in mind.
